Visit to American University of Sarjah

While in Dubai, our team took the opportunity to visit an international private  university, American University of Sarjah (AUS).  Founded in 1997 by His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council of the United Arab Emirates and Ruler of Sharjah, the  university was envisaged by His Highness as a leading educational institution in the Gulf region. The university offers 26 majors and 45 minors at the undergraduate level, and 13 master's degrees programs through four academic divisions, namely (1) College of Architecture, Art and Design, (2) College of Arts and Sciences, (3) College of Engineering and (4) School of Business Administration.  Consciously based upon American institutions of higher education, AUS is thoroughly grounded in Arab culture and is part of a larger process of the revitalization of intellectual life in the Middle East.
We met up with scholars and researchers from the school of business administration, including a fellow Malaysian, Associate Professor Dr Norita Ahmad who is now a full time faculty member of the university.  We see a lot of potentials for the Accounting Research Institute to collaborate with scholars from the university - in terms of staff & student exchanges, research collaboration and  and joint publications.

Successful International Visits to Dubai and Iran

The Accounting Research Institute thanks Professor Dato' Dr Mustaffa Zain and his team for their successful recent international visits to Dubai and Iran.  In Dubai, they attended the Global Academy of Training & Research (GATR) in collaboration with various National and International Universities and Publishers.  Themed "Contemporary Issues in Business And Social Sciences Research: A Dubai Initiative", ARI team managed to get their papers accepted for publication in several SCOPUS and ERA-indexed journals.  In Iran, the team visited two universities, namely Payam Noor University and Imam Reza University.  They were also invited to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Malaysian Embassy in Tehran.  The Education attache of the Iran Embassy in Malaysia will be organising memorandum of understanding between Universiti Teknologi MARA and Top 10 universities in Iran sometime in April 2017. Dato' Dr Mustaffa was heading the delegation comprising ARI fellows and associates and officers from several statutory bodies who are members of the Association of Malaysian Statutory Bodies (Persatuan Badan-Badan Berkanun Malaysia, PBBM).  The visit has received a  lot of attention from many Iran universities and other government agencies and there were reports of the visits that appeared in Iran's mainstream newspapers and television stations.  ARI also thank Dr Soheil Kaziman, our post-doctoral scholar who is from Iran.  He was responsible for arranging the logistics including places to visit and meetings with the right people in Iran.  Dr Soheil was a PhD student at the Faculty of Accountancy and stayed back to do his post-doctoral training at ARI.  Iran is also home to the Islamic Citation Centre (ISC).  In 2008, the 57 member countries of the Organisation of the Islamic Conference (OIC) have approved the creation of an Islamic Citation Centre (ISC) to be based in Iran.
Basically, the ISC will manage a Science Citation Index similar to that of Thomson Reuters Scientific, which will analyse research performance in Islamic countries with the aim of improving research output and impact. The index will rank Islamic countries' scientific publications, introduce quantitative and qualitative measures for journals, and produce analytical reports on the status of universities, research institutions and technology centres by looking at their research productivity, impact and excellence.  It is our aspiration that some of UiTM journals will be indexed with ISC.  Well done team, you have done us proud.

APMAA Conference 2015 - Day 3

The conference so far has been amazing - great paper discussions, interesting plenary sessions, delicious foods, great hosts and friendly participants.  APMAA Conference 2015 continues with more parallel sessions on day 3.  The theme of this year's conference is indeed apt and timely.   Management accounting is not just used to feed management with relevant information for optimal decision making and control, more importantly, management accountants must rise to the current need for sustainable development.  In CIMA’s recent report Acting Under Pressure, findings affirmed that a transparent operating culture, support from management and compliance with both local and international regulations and norms, are necessary for effective business reputation. With the potential for unethical business practice, the reputational and operations costs of “being caught out” can be high around how ethics are played out and supported within organisations. Growing research around the topic shows that ethical practice makes a difference in supporting long term success of companies, particularly in relation to risk. From a public perception view point, politically and socially, it is seen as increasingly important, as events playing out globally in the last few years have shown backed by the rise of influence on wider society via social media and web channels.
The interesting aspect of the conference is the practice of appointing paper discussants for each of the conference paper.  Authors and researchers are given a lot of opportunities to mingle and discuss their papers with renowned international professors.  At the end of the day, all researchers want to find suitable avenue to publish their papers in reputable journals, and as such feedback from conferences such as APMAA 2015 is indeed valuable.  Later in the afternoon, there were two more paper presentations - one by a management accounting practitioner and another from the Secretary General of the Ministry of Research, Technology and Higher Education Indonesia.  Just before the closing ceremony of APMAA conference 2015, special awards were given to two best paper winners.  Congratulations Nik Herda from Universiti Teknologi MARA for being the winner of Best Paper Award APMAA Conference 2015.

APMAA Conference 2015 - Day 2

After a very successful first day with PhD Colloquium, APMAA Conference 2015 proceeded with its second day event at another site.  Udayana University,  the oldest public university in the province of Bali hosts the APMAA conference proper.  The opening ceremony of APMAA Conference 2015 was by itself a very grand event - with a special Balinese dance, cultural show and "hitting" of the gong to symbolize an auspicious occasion.  After the opening ceremony, APMAA conference starts with two plenary sessions that discuss the theme "The Role of Management Accounting Towards Sustainable Development". The morning session was held in the university Grand Ballroom.  In the afternoon, parallel sessions were held in ten different seminar rooms.  This year sees 120 conference papers being submitted by researchers from sixteen different countries.  In the evening, the six organizing universities hosted a welcome dinner for all participants at the Pramar Sanur Beach Hotel Bali.  Audiences were later entertained with Shadow show or more popularly known as "Wayang Kulit" and other Balinese dance.
Wayang kulit is the most popular form of shadow theatre in Indonesia.  It has been extremely important in the development of Javanese and Balinese theatre, as most of the other forms of classical theatre have derived their story materials, stylisation and many performing techniques directly from it.  During the dinner, Chairman of APMAA, Professor Susumu Ueno presented thank you "momentos" and certificates of appreciations to all hosts of APMAA Conference 2015.
